Bluff Briefs: Alum Corners Hollywood Success

News, Transfer Students

In keeping with our celebration of National Transfer Student Week, shining a spotlight on Class of 2015 Transfer Lion Matthew Law, who is roaring to Hollywood success as a series regular on Tyler Perry’s new soapy drama, “The Oval.” Originally from Seattle, Matt plays a lovelorn pharmacist/schemer on the BET series, which debuted earlier this week. But the bright lights of Tinsel Town hasn’t dulled his Lion pride…

“LMU gave me a lot of space to grow and fail-forward,” Matt said, who credits its nationally-ranked School of Film & Television for bringing his skills on both sides of the camera into focus. “As a creative, you have to be willing to take risks, and you have to let yourself shine without trying to appease anybody except the story you are trying to tell.”

He added that the connections and creative collaborators he picked up along the way were doubly impactful, most notably with his film school peer Matt Thompson. The pair launched a thriving video production company following graduation, aptly called The Matts Productions.

“I left the bluff with more confidence in my voice and ability to tell stories,” he said. “Due in large part to LMU’s ultra-supportive community of students and faculty.”

Looking to the future, Matt aspires to write/direct/produce cinematic stories that explore themes of social justice and righteousness, in order to become vehicles for empathy and social change.

“I saw LMU’s social justice side in action,” he said. “To be a part of something that reaches out to serve and connect with others on a global-scale was eye-opening and inspirational on many levels, and I hope to continue embodying that spirit in my work.”

As for what advice he has for future Lions?

“Take risks and embrace discomfort,” Matt said. “When you start college, the definition of yourself has yet to be written. LMU helps you discover it.”

In addition to “The Oval,” Matt has also had recurring roles on “Agents of Shield” and “The Paynes,” among others. You can catch this Lion in the act Wednesday evenings at 10 p.m. on BET.
